Important Reminder – All employees listed below MUST complete the required Foundations in Health and Safety training by September 30, 2017 per the Federal Child Care and Development Block Grant training requirements.

Those child care employees and volunteers affected by this federal law are:

  • caregivers in family day care and group family day care programs (providers, assistants, substitutes)
  • caregivers in small day care centers (providers, assistants, and substitutes)
  • directors in day care centers and school age child care programs
  • teachers and assistant teachers in day care centers and school age child care programs
  • substitute teachers and substitute assistant teachers in centers and school age child care programs
  • volunteers in all programs, who have the potential for regular and substantial contact with children at the child care program
  • legally-exempt group, family and in-home providers, caregivers, employees, and volunteers with the potential for regular and substantial contact with children

Summer has arrived! A few regulation reminders regarding pool use, sunscreen and trampolines:

Pool Use:

  • The use of spa pools, hot tubs and fill-and-drain wading pools is prohibited.  (417.5(g)(1)
  • The program must obtain prior written permission from the parent for his or her child to use the pool. (417.5(g)(4)
  • Provide to the office documentation demonstrating that there will be adequate supervision of all children in care while children use the pool. (417.5(g)(3)(i))
  • Must submit documentation acceptable to the office demonstrating that consistent, safe and adequate water quality of the pool will be maintained. (417.5(g)(3)(ii))
  • Must submit a written pool safety plan acceptable to the office that sets forth adequate safety standards for the use of the pool. (417.5(g)(3)(iii))

Sunscreen & other topical ointments:

  • Program must obtain written permission to administer any over-the-counter products. (417.11(f)(7)(i))
  • Program must document every time over-the-counter topical ointments, lotions and creams, sprays, including sunscreen and insect repellent are applied. (417.11(c)(1))

Trampolines:

  • Use of trampolines by day care children is prohibited, except for small one person exercise trampolines. (417.5(w))
